The Ludlow Motel, Originally Named The Mohawk In Goldfield, Nevada.
In 1921 the building and the adjacent cabins were moved to Main Street in Ludlow and renamed the Oasis. The building was purchased and moved a couple blocks North to Route 66 and renamed the Ludlow Motel.
After the motel was purchased and moved to Route 66 by Venus and Henry ‘Penny’ Pendergast (shown in photo), the couple continued to operate it. The motel consisted of the main building with several separate cabins that no longer remain. The Pendergast’s lived across the street in a small white wooden house that remains in ruins today (small white house in photo).
After opening the motel Penny was elected as the local constable of Ludlow by San Bernardino County. Penny’s wife Venus, served as deputy whenever a matron was needed for women prisoners.
Penny remained constable until he retired in April 1967. When Penny passed away the following June, Venus moved to Escondido to be near her son, Jackson. When Venus passed away in 1989, she was buried along side Penny in Barstow, California.
